Methodology

methodology_A spectrum of techniques are used to help change behaviour from those which are hundreds of years old to the most current and leading edge.

They all have one thing in common – they work.

Below is a brief description, for an all inclusive distilled guide read Authentic Catalyst.

Behavioural Change

Knowing how to change behaviour has become far more important than ever before because leveraging the human potential is becoming one of the few competitive advantages left in the west.

Many generally know what to do but struggle in being able to do it or to keep to it. This is because changing behaviour is a skill which we are usually not taught.

Every behaviour can be changed if you know how.

Change happens in an instant. The trick is to have everything ready for that instant. To master the skill of changing behaviour there are six important concepts/techniques:

Unconscious Mind

The part of your mind which you are unconscious of using, the part which

  1. Runs all the functioning of your body: digesting food, moving muscles which move limbs etc
  2. Stores all your memories: if now consider where your house keys are the answer will pop into your conscious mind whereas before it was stored in your unconscious.
  3. Stores all Blocks (below): for example if someone has the Block of ‘fear of presenting’ the unconscious mind would store this and bring it up for resolution when the subject comes up. This is of course usually an inappropriate time for us consciously.
  4. Controls behaviour: it is only with your unconscious minds permission and acceptance that behaviour may be changed
  5. Is the most powerful part of the brain – it does so much more than the conscious mind and exceptional results are only achieved by tapping into the unconscious minds power

Blocks

Negative emotions and limiting beliefs are Blocks because they usually block, or hinder, you from achieving what you want. The unconscious mind stores such things and brings them up for resolution with the best of intentions but with generally negative consequences.

For example if someone has the Block of ‘fear of presenting’ the unconscious mind stores this and brings it up for resolution when the subject comes up. This is usually an inappropriate time for us consciously – e.g. when someone asks us to present something.

All Blocks are stored in the unconscious mind.

Before a behaviour can be sustainably changed all relevant Blocks must be removed, with the permission of the unconscious mind.

NLP

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study and practice of human behavioural excellence. There are two distinct elements to it: the recipes of what to do to achieve specific behaviours; and the process of copying behaviours.

For example establishing rapport, that connected feeling when you know someone well, has a recipe that if you follow you will have anyone you meet have that lovely connected feeling to you within seconds of meeting.

NLP has important techniques to accelerate behavioural excellence. They are very useful for those who work with others and especially so for coaches, managers, leaders, parents and teachers.

Hypnosis

A trance state is essential for accessing the unconscious mind. Hypnosis is a highly effective technique for inducing trance. We are always in a level of trance, we cannot help ourselves it is just a part of being human – when you are driving from A to B, get to B and realise you have no recollection of how you got there, that is a deeper level of trance than say if you are consciously reading a map.

Many fear hypnotists and hypnosis because of the experience and knowledge that is commonly shared in our society. It is such a shame because Hypnosis is very useful tool, and just a tool, like any other – it can be used for good or bad.

Hypnosis has differing elements within the techniques of inducing trance. The one which is most effective for coaching is a light level of trance where the client knows exactly what is going on, hears and remembers everything, and feels incredibly relaxed. For those who have done Pilates or Yoga, it is very similar to the end of the sessions when all the muscles are relaxed from top to toe.

Pure Coaching

It is a highly effective process of questioning which empowers the recipient while assisting to achieve a set objective. It is a profession as well as a skill that people may apply to assist them in leveraging the human potential.

Character Profiling

Character profiling is as important in leveraging your strengths as knowing whether you are right or left handed.

We are all different, unique, and there are patterns in our preferences, behaviours and decision making. Those preferences have been researched, analysed and put into groupings, character profiles. Carl Jung is known as the father of character profiling. His original works has been the foundation of many profiling techniques including the Meta Programmes in NLP, MBTI, Profile U and Speed EQ.

As a coach it is essential to understand the different profiles because it will enable you to be far more effective.
